1966 Ford GT40 - $89,975 - Anaheim, CA -

1966 Ford GT40 MK1, This is a MK1 GT40 replica built as a turn-key car from GT40 North America. This car was hand built by seasoned race car fabricators and crew chiefs in Indianapolis, Indiana where the original design was updated with new materials and technologies. This car came out of the famous car collection of John O'Quinn who had amassed a collection in excess of 600 cars. This car has never been registered and is being sold on an MSO and has only been driven 290 miles since new. SONY awarded the GT40 North America car their "Best Domestic Automobile" prize at the 2004 SEMA show in Las Vegas.

These cars were built using some of the most cutting edge materials available with the body, dash, and additional interior componants utilizing carbon fiber. The 392/485 HP engines were specially built and supplied for these cars by ROUCHE. The stainless steel headers were built by BURNS and are a work of art and nicer than anything else we've seen on the market. The transmission is a 5 speed ZF like the original GT40's had. This car will do 0 to 60 MPH in 4.5 seconds!

The total production of the GT40 North America cars was limited to less than 20 for sure and I've heard numbers as low as 6 units produced so it is a very rare car indeed! The expense of building these cars due to the top of the line materials used caused the halt of production since the MSRP was in excess $125,000.00. Whoever buys this car will have one of the very few around as most of these are in private collections and may never come up for sale. If you have any questions feel free to contact us via e-mail or at (714) 535-8555.

This “J-Car” continuation is the culmination of contributions from a broad and talented pool of engineers, historians, fabricators (and dreamers!) in the U.S. over the last 20 plus years. A once in a lifetime project was put together enabling these artists to come together to recreate the most important project in Ford’s racing history. Even the original “skunk-works” company name, Kar-Kraft, Inc., was resurrected by Mike Teske to build this iconic and exacting continuation car.

As most know, during the 1960’s, a high priority was given by Ford to build an aerodynamic, lightweight, (honey comb aluminum) chassis-designed car capable of handling the well developed and powerful 7 liter engine and transaxle in endurance racing. It’s success is well documented by racing historians and culminated by its dominating 1967 LeMans win driven by A.J. Foyt and Dan Gurney (J-5 in the Henry Ford Museum).

Fast forward 45 years. J-16 is one of 7 cars re-created in exacting detail of the original 12 MK-IV cars from Kar Kraft. Cars so exact that they were awarded J continuation serial numbers! (J-13 –J-19) Extensive research to duplicate these cars involved using the original blue prints, studying thousands of photos, and consultations with the engineers and designers of the original race winning cars. Additionally, and most importantly, was the choice of the builder….

You can email me to request a link to a large pdf file which describes this project and these spectacular cars.

… (back to our story) Enter a gentleman by the name of Kenny Thompson. Kenny has been noted for decades as a premier race car fabricator , winning NASCAR Fabricator of the Year twice with work at the Holman and Moody team. Kenny actually worked on the original cars and is perhaps the only person with the skill set, knowledge and PATIENCE to duplicate these cars to this quality! More than 10 years of actual parts fabrication involved! Last, but not least, no expense was spared by the team of investors and owners that saw this project through from dream to fruition.

In truth, we may never see one of the original MKIV's become available for sale in our lifetime (most will never even SEE a MKIV in person). Very few would have the dozen or more millions that it would take to purchase it.  For a FRACTION of the cost, look at the quality and exactness of this FIA certified continuation car that has been featured of Vintage Motorsports Magazine, on the cover of SAAC’s annual edition, as well as listed in the World Registry of Cobras & GT40’s.

You may never have another opportunity to buy a car like this. CALL KEN TODAY 828 674-6155

1990 Ford GT40 - $495,000 - Simi Valley, CA -

1990 Ford Safir Mark V GT40/P 1132

It wasn't really until the values began to skyrocket in the 1980s that the "continuation" car emerged. It was the result of the cross trajectories of the law of supply and demand and the values of certain cars increasing to the point where it became financially feasible to reproduce each and every individual part, and then combine them into a complete car.

A "continuation" car is more than just a perfect duplicate of the original. Its production must have some immediately recognizable connection to its original manufacture, which, in turn, allows the cars to be given serial numbers beginning where the original production left off. Peter Thorpe's teaming with John Willment provided exactly the connection that legitimized these Ford GTs. Utilizing the original blue prints, some of the tooling and jigs, the original J.W.A. serial number plates and even some of the same people who worked on the original cars were all large pluses in this project. About the only thing left was what name to give the car.

That turned out to be the easy part. The last model Ford GT was the MK IV, so the obvious designation for the Thorpe/Willment Safir cars was the next number: MK V.

As Safir MK Vs were under construction the question of their authenticity came up with some regularity. This question has been addressed by many, but especially important were the opinions of three noted GT40 personalities.

First, noted author and photographer John Allen, who has written his share of GT40 books, commented that he truly believed that the MK V was a GT40. He further admonished that individuals seeking a GT40 should act quickly; since it was unlikely Thorp would be building MK Vs forever.

A second endorsement came from internationally respected GT40 historian Ronnie Spain, who summed up a detailed dissertation by stating, simply and eloquently, "The MK V IS a GT40."

A final thumbs-up came from J.W.A. co-founder and stern-faced master GT40 race tactician, the late John Wyer. Upon examining one of the continuation production cars, he conceded that the MK V wasn't exactly original, but it was exactly what the GT40 would have been had J.W.A. continued building them. Which, come to think of it, is exactly what they are.

This Safir Mark V, GT40 P/1132, was ordered by Ashton Marshall of The Fine Car Store (Fine Sports Cars) in San Diego, CA and completed in 1990 by Safir Engineering Ltd. This Mark V is one of the five big block cars powered by a Dove aluminum 427 (bored and stoked to 496 cubic-inches) with MK II bodywork with rear deck scoops, shoulder scoops, and adjustable rear spoiler.

The car was then sold and put on display in a museum in Japan.

In March of 1995, the car was sold to its current owner in Michigan. This owner has a major collection of cars and has meticulously stored and maintained the car. The car has only 59 original miles from new and has never been restored or reconditioned in any way. Another special feature of this GT40, as represented by Ashton Marshall, is that it is one of the few Safir GT40s built with a carbon fiber body. The current owner of 19 years has this GT40 titled in Michigan. This GT40 is currently in the custody of Bruce Zeigler in Southern California.

This is a great opportunity to buy one of the best Safir GT40's. One of 40 Safir GT40 Mark V's, one of 5 big blocks, carbon fiber body, 59 original miles, an original car. When these Safir GT40's were first sold they were 50% of the cost of an original time period GT40. With the explosion of values of the original time period GT40's in recent years these cars are now a very small percentage of the cost of an original car. Safir GT40's are highly regarded, have proven to be tied in value to the original time period GT40's and proven to be very collectable. Safir GT40's are found in some of the best collections around the world. They are also very exciting to drive on the street or track, and qualify for vintage racing events. The men who designed, engineered, and assembled these cars are some of our heros who contributed to one of the greatest legacies in our American Racing History, "The Ford That Beat Ferrari".

1968 Ford GT40 - Auction - London, UNITED KINGDOM -

Based on Eric Broadley's Lola GT, the original Ford GT40 was spawned by Henry Ford II's ambition to beat Ferrari at Le Mans, a feat it duly achieved for the first time in 1966. A decade on from its final Le Mans win, the GT40 had become firmly established as one of the all-time great classic sports-racing cars, leading to an increased demand for unmolested originals and the start of a replica-building industry. With just 107 GT40s being constructed at Ford Advanced Vehicles' Slough factory between 1966 and 1972, it is hardly surprising that a cottage industry of independent manufacturers arose to satisfy the continuing demand for replicas of Ford's charismatic Le Mans winner.

This particular Ford GT40 replica, which is fitted with a 3.0-litre Ford V6 engine, was purchased in 2003 from the dealer, 'The Peter Leary Car Collection' by well-known collector, the late Barry Burnett and will need re-commissioning before further use. The car is offered for sale by the Burnett family, and is sold strictly as viewed. Finished in white with black detail and Gulf livery, the car is visually in terrific condition. The vehicle's registration status is not known, however it does come with a bill of sale from the auction where the car was purchased.

This car is going under the hammer at Coys auction at Spring Classics , Royal Horticultual Society, Lindley Hall SW1P 2PE  on March 11th  2014. Please contact our auction department for further details. Email:  auctions@coys.co.uk Tel: ( + 44) 208 614 7888
